During the Salem witch trials, they were considered "familiars" or spies for witches, leading to the persecution of these poor cats. They also "disappear" in darkness, which leaves owners easily panicked over finding them, or assuming they're lost. The biggest reason is the association with evil trope. They're still seen as spooky, creepy, or plotting.

My best friend has a void cat, and I'll be the first to say how adorable they are! Who cares if they show up as blobs in photographs?
